Location Map

Griffith is the land of the indigenous Wiradjuri Tribe, with their homeland covering the entire Murrumbidgee Area. Griffith is located 33km north of the Murrumbidgee River which is the source of the irrigation water that supplies the many agricultural pursuits and industries.

The diversity of the Griffith region is often a surprise, given its central location in the fertile heart of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area of south-west New South Wales. Griffith is a cosmopolitan city just four and a half hours drive from Melbourne and six hours from Sydney, with a wonderful blend of cultures, a place to experience the tastes of the world.

The city is named after Sir Arthur Griffith, the first State Minister for Public Works and was designed by Walter Burley Griffin, the renowned American architect who also designed Australia's capital city, Canberra. Like Canberra his design for Griffith featured a distinctive radial pattern with wide tree-lined streets, ring roads and parks. The focal point of the town was to be a grand circle, the centre of government administrations, crowning the central hill, with the business sector in close proximity. However the plan was never truly fulfilled, but you can still enjoy the grandeur of the wide streets, circuits and parks though-out the city. The community has now grown to create a cosmopolitan city, home to a wide range of cultures from Italian, Pacific Islanders, European, Indian and many other cultures.

Griffith is serviced by many transport opperators including Regional Express flights to Griffith from Melbourne and Sydney daily.

Griffith Festival of Gardens - 3rd weekend of October

Each year Griffith's residents open up some of their most prized gardens to the public, ranging from small cottage gardens to stunning large acreage creations. The Gardens of Griffith reflect the joy and pleasure the community gains from creating stunning displays. The Mediterranean climate provides optimum conditions for the Griffith Festival of Gardens. The main street is lined with citrus sculptures based on the famous Menton sculptures of France. Other activities include the official opening with bell ringing and music in the cathedral and festival dinner dance including a keynote address by this year's Celebrity Guest.

Wineries

"Plant a six-inch nail in this soil, water it and in a year you will have a crowbar," said winemaker JJ McWilliam when he landed in the Griffith area in 1913 with a bullock cart of vine cuttings. McWilliam was part of a trickle of farmers and visionaries settling the once arid plains, confident that the giant Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme would transform the area into fertile lands.

Griffith is home to some of the worlds most enjoyed wines as well as some of Australia's best produce including Citrus, Rice and many fruits and vegetables. Below is a link to a list of Griffith wineries, be sure to drop in next time you visit.
